go to the hard drive manufacturers website and download the diagnostic
tools. Copy/extract the tool to a floppy. Reconfigure the PC to boot from
floppy, insert the floppy, run diagnostics.
If your hard drive manufacturer doesn't make the tools easy to find download
from seagate and use 'generic'.
or, fdisk the drive and attempt to install winxp, when offered the
formatting options select ntfs (not quick format) this provides a quite
reliable test.
or, change the jumper to slave and insert into another PC as a slave drive
and use windows disk tools and/or norton utilities
