Hard disk freezes

Hi,

I have just bought a 500Gb HD and it often seems frozen when I try to
access it. Although if I EXPLORE it, it is OK.

So here is what happens...

If I go to START > right click EXPLORE > find the disk and open it,
then there is no problem, it works perfectly. However I find this an
irritating method of working. Also if I go to SAVE a document, from
the FIND menu, then I have no difficulty in accessing the HD.

If I go to START > MY COMPUTER > select the disk and double click it
then, so far so good, it opens up OK. If I then double click any
folder or document on the disk, then there is a several minute delay
before it opens. In fact the computer seems to get severe indigestion
because the window associated with the disk freezes. I can continue
working whilst this happens by the way, I just can't do anything with
the HD, unless I approach it using the EXPLORE method.

I have reformatted the disk and I have unplugged the USB cables and
swopped them round. I do a lot of graphic design work so I am quite
experienced with storage devices, although I have never seen anything
like this before.

Anybody got any ideas please?

Thanks in advance.

Julie

Welcome to Microsoft Windows Vista Newsgroups

Windows XP Newsgroups

Perhaps a newsgroup related to hardware might be more appropriate.
