Hard Disk Problem

Hello,

I have a problem with my hard disk at Windows Vista Ultimate. I don't write
anything to it, but the free space is constantly decreasing. I have
approximately 30 GB occupied, bit the system shows me that 70 GB is occupied
and this figure is getting bigger with every day.

Please, help.

It's System Restore. You can delete all but the last restore point using
the Disk Cleanup Wizard, if you really want to. I'd advise against you
disabling System Restore entirely, unless you are a power-user with
scheduled automated network imaging backups or something, like me, and it
doesn't sound like you are.

I tried to delete old restore points and it helped only partially. The free
space is still decreasing (several GB during one evening). What else can it
be? Can I delete somehow shadow copies of less importnat files?

Try installing the trial of Treesize Pro, and be sure to run as Admin, by
right clicking the shortcut for it. There is a File Ages tab, that you
could probably use to investigate this, but I cannot remember if it will be
any help. The main views will certainly help though.

you can perform a SEARCH and use ADVANCED to do a date scan to see what files were created on a certain date.

I installed Treesize Pro and it showed that the biggest part is occupied by
System Volume Information folder (14GB). Then I created the new restore point
and deleted the previous. SVI shrinked to 1,5 GB, but then during about 2-3
hours it was growing steadily to 5,5 GB and, It hink, will grow further the
more I will use the computer. What is it? Why is it growing even after I
finished creating a restore point? Please, advise.

The System Volume Information folder contains the System Restore data, and
the reason it is growing again is because it is recording all the changes as
they happen. You can always delete the previous when you need more space,
or you can restrict the amount of disk space that System Restore can use if
you are so worried about it. With the size of modern hard drives, I do not
see what the problem is.

Like SS wrote, the System Volume Information holds all of the System Restore
points and other Volume Shadow Copy files. The default space reserved for
this folder is 15% of the drives space. You can easily adjust this using the
steps on the following website.
