Hard Drive Issue and Vista

Hello,

I bought a new notebook from Best buy about a week ago and I just upgraded
it to Windows Vista Home Premium. The software installed perfectly fine, but
there is something that I am now noticing: The harddisk makes a clicking
noise once every minute sequentially.

Now, when I had Windows XP Media Center edition installed on my notebook I
did not have this problem. I even called Hewlett Packard to see if my hard
drive is "going out." They said being that the notebook is only a week old,
that this is NOT hardware issue. Now to my question(s):

1) Do any of you notice a lot of hard drive activity in Windows Vista? I
dont mean when ur launching an app like IE7 or when ur searching for
something; I mean when ur PC is sitting idle.

2) Could my problem be the result of not installing some drivers into my
notebook? When I called HP tech support they said that the Vista drivers
will not be availiable for my notebook until mid Feb. There are two hardware
devices in "device manager" that do not have drivers installed for them. The
two devices are: Coprocessor and Unknown Device.

Please dont be too harsh in ur replies; I am a newb when it comes to Vista!

I noticed the same thing....not sure what the deal is...went back to xp and
no clicking sound....if you find an answer please let me know....thanks

The automated indexer running to index the HD, will stop if the indexing is
finished and even defrag may be running too.

I'm having the same problem. Just bought an HP Pavilion dv2000 and the
clicking sound is driving me crazy... I did a "clean" install of Vista
Premium and downloaded all the latest drivers from HP's website. No issues
in "device manager" but the hard drive "click" keeps happening every 30 to 60
seconds -- even when the computer is idle. Is this problem only occurring on
HP's, or are others having the same issue?

new Dell Dimension 9200 delivered 9/2/07 and since yesterday am experiencing
same sort of low click from hard drives every minuit or so even if doing
nothing on pc.Have sent my problem off to Dell to sort out.
did not notice it when i first got new pc ,checked with the dell
diagnostics program on pc and all tests passed.
gonna see if it is actually from hard drive or if its something with the pc
sound system ie sound card or if it is the vista sound scheme.

will advise if i find anything

HP technical support sent me the following email message:

"Thank you for writing back. I am sorry to know that the issue is
unresolved. At this point, I would like to inform you that there is a
hardware issue with the notebook fan which requires onsite diagnosis. As the
notebook is under warranty we will be happy to process mail-in service."

So it looks like I'm going to have to send my new laptop in for repair.

Both of you should be aware that most PC manufacturers will, if you
send in a PC under warranty and with an operating system other than the
factory original will restore to factory state regardless of any
personal files you have on it.

So back up back up back up -- and be prepared for them to say there is
nothing wrong with the machine but there is with VISTA files to control
it.

I hope I'm wrong but I doubt it.
