My hard drive light flashes once bright and once not as bright, this repeats
for ever?

I've looked at the reliability and performance monitor but can narrow it
down to any one service?

Even when the computer has been idle over night I come down in the morning
and look at the light then and it does the same thing before a mouse is
moved or key pressed.

Thanks for any help narrowing it down if possible.

Rich

Hi,

Possibilities include defragging, indexing, utility programs, antivirus
scanning, among others. Have you checked the event viewer to see if
something is listing as being interrupted when you begin use of the system?

No but maybe that's a better place to start instead the performance monitor.

Thanks, Rich

If it's a steady once a second flash it may not be the disk at all.
Although it's regarded as a disk activity light it can be bus activity
such as a once a second check for the insertion of a CD/DVD. Dell
machine ?

No it's a power spec (Micro Center brand). Maybe that's why I can't see disk
activity?

Thanks, Rich

Download Process Monitor from here.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896645.aspx

You have to be fast as it lists several thousand processes
per second, but most processes have a lot of sequential
entries when they run.
