Hard Drive Keeps Spinning Down, Back up again

Hey all,

I've got a rather annoying problem. I am running Vista Ultimate 32bit and
every 30 seconds or so, one of my hard drives keeps spinning down, then sits
idle until it needs to use it again (usually within 30 seconds or so). The
whole system pauses while this is happening, and is getting pretty annoying.

So far I have uninstalled KB938979, which worked for a short while. Also, I
removed some registry keys relating to some Intel drives that I've heard
cause troubles. I can't remember which keys they were.

The problem didn't happen when I first installed Vista, or when it was
running XP. And I think it started when Microsoft brought out those
performance fixes.

Any help is appreciated.

Disable indexing and see if that solves your problem.

Hi Sam,

Double check you Power Plan Options to see if by chance the hard disk
is set to shutdown around a minute or so.

I have the same problem running Vista Ultimate 32bit escept it happens
randomly. I have 3 internal SATA drives, the first two participate in
RAID 0 and the third is a normal drive. The third randomly parks the
heads and spins down and then backup while the system waits for this to
complete, usually several seconds.

I have the latest patches installed except for SP1(still waiting for
the windows update to show up) and I have told Vista to never turn off
the hard drive.

The sound and delay is annoying and I fear that I may be doing some
harm to the dirve since this happens a lot in a normal day.

I have replaced the drive in question but the new drive does the same
thing.

I'm on the verge of going back to XP but I keep hoping that SP1 will
arrive any day now and it will fix this problem.
