If it's a bug it's a bug. But if it's not, I'd check the serial cable. Some
of the newer ones clip in, but all the first generation cables easily slide
off and lose their connection. Check that. Make sure the serial cable is
securely seated. Same with power cable, especially if it's a serial power
cable. Both ends!
