I have Defender running but I can't tell why the drive is in constant use.
I'm using a Netgear wireless USB adapter which shows non-stop activity back
to the router, but it seems to be matching the activity lights on the modem
and router. (I've read "Windows Vista for Dummies" but can't seem to find
the chapter that refers to this problem. The PC already came with SP1
installed.

its just wat happens if your only talking about the modem wireless router and
usb stick. as long as you dont mean your hard drive in your computer then
thats how it is. if you shut down your computer and looked at the modem and
wireless router youll see it is aparrently still in constant use, i
understand this is a bit of a worry but its not because it is the same with
everybody

If you have continuous Internet activity going in and out of yuor computer; I
would be worried if you don't know what it is!

You don't give enough info.
Look for spyware using the Program at the link below. Spybot S & D 1.5.2

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Also, run your anti-virus.
