Hard Drive Space Missing

I've been reading a lot in the forum about others having drive space loss due
to shadow files, system restore, etc.

I understand that.

Here's my issue. I have new IBM Thinkpad T60 (very nice). It came with a
160 GB hard drive. I added a second 160 GB drive in the Ultrabay.

Well I've put all of my programs and documents on my primary C: drive that
shows a formatted capacity of 142 GB. Windows is now show me only having 19
GB of free space.

I've gone through every folder and find that I'm only using 60 GB of space
for EVERYTHING visible. That leaves a whopping 60 GB of space unaccounted
for.

Surely the shadow files aren't using that! I turned off system restore and
recover part of the 19 GB free (prior to that it was showing 8 GB free).

So, where's the rest of my space? I ran a chkdsk /f on the system at boot
and nothing was found. It's not fragmented that badly either. I ran Disk
cleanup and had it delete files (again to get to the 19 GB free point).

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks,

Scott

Download Treesize Pro which will do a quick scan to see what folders are
using big amounts of space - it shows a lot of hidden folders. System Volume
Information should use 10-15% of disk space at max and after a few weeks
usually gets near that anyway. Once it reaches the limit, it removes old
shadow copies and just replaces with new ones. It certainly should take more
than 25GB of Space on a 160GB hard drive.

My hard disk is partitioned into two 80GB ones so I have Documents on one
and the main system on other. I currently using 26.5GB according to TreeSize
Pro which shows some of the hidden folders - with 11GB of System Volume
Information (I did do a clean a few days or a week or so ago so it may fill
up higher) and nearly 9GB for Windows Folder. Then around 3GB for Program
files and the rest are much smaller.

I have about 60GB in use on a 250GB drive. And yes, system restore
used an *additional* 60GB within the scope of a few days. That's just
insane. Since I've never once had an occasion to use system restore, I
just figure I'll run with it off. I prefer being careful and having
good backups to that feature anyway.
