My Vista Hard Drive space seems to use more than the average space than my Xp machine
The space used keeps increasing for no apparent reason

Has anyone out there experienced a similar used space problem

Each time you change something, system restore saves another restore point
which takes up about 2GB.

To Stuart

Thank you for your opinion

Did you notice this 2 GB change per use on your Vista machine

Did you ever notice this on an XP machine

Yes, I saw this on my Vista machine. Vista will use up to 15% of the hard
disk space. In my case 45GB was being used (15% of the 300GB drive). It
moved up about 2GB at a time. I never had an XP machine. I don't change
computer systems too often.

This is probably due to the addition of System Restore points and
Shadow Copies. If you are satisfied with your machine as it is and it is
running properly you can delete all but the latest restore point.
Open Disk Cleanup and select "Files from all users on this computer".
Click on the elevation prompt and then OK on the drive window. Once the Disk
Cleanup window opens click on the "More Options" tab and then click on the
Clean up button under System Restore and Shadow Copies.

In addition to what Stuart recommended you can try a free utility to see
what's taking up HDD space.

There are others out there as well.

To Stuart: Your information about Vista using up 15% is very revealing

Using your 15% number and my 500 GB hard drive, I get 69.75 GB extra
When I add this number to my 68GB applications and data, I get 137.75 GB used. This is close to what my machine is now showing. This is double my XP space. I called Microsoft today, and their research team is now investigating this problem after they got into my machine for 1 1/2 hours

I for the moment conclude, that Vista is a memory hog as compared to XP. Thanks for your information

To C.B.

Your suggestion is perfect. I tried it and solved my problem.

Thank you very much. Even Microsoft could not solve this problem today.

To Jimbo Jones

Thank you for your freeware suggestion. TREESIZEFREE download shows paths to files for anaysis

C.B. of this Forum had the answer. System Restore needs to be cleaned out occasionally to free up space
