I have an Acer Aspre 7730
it has 2 partitions that are each 69.52GB
one has 22gb free
which is backups of my files
there's about 3 backups on that partition
on my C: drive it has 9GB free
this varies some days
sometimes it goes up and down
though I don't understand why
my system restore was put from 15GB to 5GB
and this is fine for me
I defragment and disk clean alot
I have 15GB of music and pictures
when I first got the laptop there was about 9GB already filled
so where has the rest of the space gone?
all my friends laptops have 120GB and they have about 100GB left
what's happend to mine and how can I get it back?

keeping your backups on your working hard drive is a recipe for disaster

Bad idea. You should back up to an external hard drive instead.

1 GB is enough.

Take your computer to a professional.

There isn't two hard drives. It's a laptop.

There is one physical HD divided (or partitioned) into two drives.

If one goes.....they both go.

Those are two partitions on the same drive. You shouldn't be messing
with the recovery partition. Do yourself a favor and buy an external USB
hard drive and back up your data there, not on the ONE hard drive you
have in your laptop.

That is the way Acer computers come configured from the factory. I don't
know why Acer does this. I don't like it either. As someone else mentioned
storing your backups on the same hard drive you are backing up is a very
poor practice. My recommendation would be to obtain a disk imaging program
and a portable USB hard drive. Make an image of all the partitions to the
USB drive. There are actually three. The Acer factory partition, C:, and D:.
I would then delete the D: partition and restore the image of C: to the
whole drive except for the Acer factory partition. There are a few pitfalls
you may run into while doing this. You may want to get some help from a
friend who has a better understanding of how partitions work. Failing this
you may be better off to have a professional set this up for you. Once set
up you could then use the imaging program to do regular backups to the USB
drive.

on my laptop I use Casper to clone my drive to an external. If the drive in
my computer goes bellyup I just remove it...very easy on a Dell
C610...instal the backup drive and away I go. The only things missing would
be any data written since the last backup. I had a hard drive failure about
a year ago and Casper saved my bacon. Making an updated clone of about 30gb
takes less than 5 minutes after the initial backup has been made

It all depends on your definition of "go." If the hard drive fails, of
course all partitions are included.

However, if "go" means a non-bootable windows, than data or anything else on
the other partitions is not impacted.

Among other places that take up space are pics, music, recycle bin, temp
files reached at %temp%, temp internet files. An app like Dx Hog Hunt is
useful for IDing all space takers and specifically what they are.
