Hard Drive whirring constantly

I have had this happening now for quite some time. Probably between 2-3
months now, and I'm getting a little fed up with it! Basically, I boot
up my pc and for ages afterwards my hard drives are being accessed. I am
getting a bit worried as I never had this happen when I had xp
installed, only since I bought Vista x64 OEM. Now as I'm typing right
now, the whirring has just stopped.

This concerns me as I have 3 x 500Gb hard drives installed in my pc
with a lot of data on. I don't want Vista to knacker any of these up!
Just for the record, the hard drives are all newish and perfectly okay (
at the moment! ).

Anyone got any tips on how to stop this from happening?

On my Vista Ultimate 64 bit, that I installed about 3 weeks ago, my hard
drive would trash for about 5 minutes, after booting up .

Since installing SP1, this seems to have stopped at least for me.

Correction, should have read " hard drive would thrash ", it was not
trashing .

Thank god you mean't 'thrashing'!

Installing SP1 on mine has made no difference to this. It's at it again
now, and I haven't done nothing except check my email and type this
message! Very strange. But I'm NOT going back to XP, no way!

Thrashing means you are a low on physical memory and Vista has resorted to using hard drive space to temporarily page out memory access. How much ram do you have? Most likely you need to buy another gig or so.

After installing SP1, I would give it a little bit to sort itself out, it
will rebuild the prefetch file and some other things I am sure.

By default, I think indexing is enabled perhaps?

Have you tried disabling that, by right click on your volume, clicking
properties, and then in the general tab, removing the check from " index
this drive for faster searching"?

I have disabled indexing on mine, as I don't really need faster searching of
my volumes, as I don't usually need to do a lot of file searching.

I have just been through all the Volumes and unticked what you said.
Took some time actually! I will now keep an eye on the pc and see if
things improve. I'll keep you posted!
Thanks.

Can I pop in with just a thought here? I have two HDD, one boots Vista and
the other XP. No boot manager as I can switch the boot priority of the
drives in the bios when I first start up. I noticed a LOT of drive activity
going on after installing SP1, (otherwise no problem). I tracked it down to
Vista indexing the second drive (with XP on it). I had all indexing turned
off, but it seems to have turned on again. The trick was that I couldn't get
enough access to the XP drive from Vista to turn it off. So at the moment
the XP drive is unplugged.

That's a tricky one and might not be relevant, but thought I'd pop it in
anyway just in case it helps someone.
