Hey all, first off let me give you the spec of my pc, im running Window
64bit, MSI Dual Quadcore processor, 8 gigs of ram, 2 500gb harddrives,
gforce 9800vid cards and creative soundblaster soundcard. Anyways thi
problem has happened last time after doing ALL these windows updates
service pack 2, the whole works. MY harddrive light stays SOLID now
even when idle, I jsut got home from work after an 8hour day, and it
still on? What is going on? I ran virus checks with AVG free editon tha
came with my pc, I keep everything up todate on a regular basis. Is thi
normal? It even sounds like I can hear my harddrive running, this i
really starting to freak me out

Activate Task Manager (Ctrl - Shift - Esc) and look to see what process or
processes are running.

AVG will not detect all malware, so download and run Malwarebytes and
SuperAntispyware..

Start "Reliability and Performance Monitor" (Click on the Windows Orb and
type "rel" to bring it up on a list)

Look at the Disk row and see if disk activity is high. The green box
indicates KB/sec, blue box Highest Activity Time.
Click on Disk to expand
Click on Read (B/min) column and note which programs is doing a lot of reads
Click on Write (B/min) column and note which programs is doing a lot of
writes

From here use your own judgement:...

You could use Task Manager and kill the processes and try to track down the
events that causing them to run on your own or...

Post the list of programs that are doing lot of disk I/O and see if someone
can help you track down the source of the problem.

Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit
Intel Q9550 Core 2 Quad 2.8Ghz
Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR
G.Skill 4GB (2GB x2) DDR2 1066Ghz
Zotac Nvidia Geforce GTX 295
Asus Xonar DX (sound card)
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB
Western Digital Caviar Green 500MB x2 (1TB RAID 0)
Gigabyte I-RAM 4GB ramdisk drive
Lite-on iHOS104 Blu-ray ROM drive
Samsung DVD-RW (I can't tell you what the model is as it's a sequence hard
for me to remember and I am away from the computer on my laptop at the
library.)

Just giving make without the model is little more useful than random
characters.

JJO5,
If your system is a new installation it can take several days for Vista to
complete the indexing of your HDD which it does when the system is otherwise
inactive.
