Hardware update - optional - VIA - Storage - Primary IDE Channel

When going to Microsoft Update and choosing Custom, as opposed to Express,
there is an optional hardware update called
VIA - Storage - Primary IDE Channel,
which I downloaded and installed. I did this on two computers and in both
cases on restart, Windows would not load. I had to load Windows using the
previous successful configuration. The effect of this was to start Windows
without this update installed. It is still downloaded, but not installed.

Has anyone else successfully installed this update?

I have a CD which I installed on both computers called USB 2.0 PCI Host Card
(VIA). The only similarity is the VIA. Would this be relevant? Would there
be a conflict? This CD contains a USB driver, so I can't see what problem
that would cause for this Microsoft update.

One solution would be to not install this update, but that would leave one
hanging around, and I usually just install all of them, as much of the time
I don't know what they mean, and it is easier to just install them rather
than decide which ones to install and which ones not to.

If others have a problem with this update, then it should be reported to
Microsoft as a problem.

Cheers

John

Lots of folk going thru that; check the Updates group if you want the gory
details. So far the only fix I've seen is to uninstall it, or not install
it in the first place.
I had some "fun" with my SATA drives too after the update; can't have
"SATA" in the disk labels, apparently. Renamed the labels & all was well.
Go figger.

I experienced this problem today. After installing the VIA - Storage -
Primary IDE Channel, the machine would constantly reboot, never did load
Windows.

Fortunately, I was able to press F8 and choose "Last Known Good
Configuration" and the machine was restored to functionality.

Microsoft should take more care in issuing such harmful updates!!

Same happened here (IBM Thinkpad G41).

Last good conf resolved the problem. The patch appears to be installed.

I wonder why this appeared today if the patch has date on june 2006 (no
recently change to any driver).

Regards.

NOT ANY MORE. They took it off, must have been a mistake to crash so
many computers. Maybe a hacker did it.

With me the Last Known configuration didn't work. And I can't load up into
Safe Mode either. Looks like I may have to reinstall XP tomorrow. For now I
am working on my Vista installation.

I have lost three computers thanks to that update. Last known config didn`t
work.
I think a class action suit is in order. We deserve compensation. Any
lawyers out
there. I lost important documents that had been backed up on other computers.
