A friend bought a new computer the other day. When they went to download
Java, the received a message that Vista, will no longer support Java, as of
December 17, 2007. Does anyone know anything about this, and what does this
mean if you use Java alot with Vista?

I haven't heard that, but I'm dead.

I can't imagine such a thing. If it was true, Java would be dead in a
couple of years. As much as Sun hates MS, they know that Java HAS to run
on Windows.

I just went to the Java download page at Sun,
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and downloaded the jre 6
package. No such message.

You can continue to run Java on a Vista machine, indefinitely. Nothing will
stop working in December 2007.

Microsoft's support for the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine will end on 31
December 2007. This has not impact on running applications; it just means
that Microsoft's technical support programme to transition users away from
the MS JVM will be ending. See
http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/default.mspx for details.

Sun's Java 6.x is fully supported on Windows Vista. This is the best Java to
run on Windows. Download it from here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

If your friend is using any Java other than Sun's, they should probably
uninstall it, and replace it with Sun Java. The JVM from Sun is the one
which is under active development and support, including being Vista aware.

Hope it helps,

Ah yes, that's it. I didn't even realize the MS JVM was still
available/supported! I thought it died years ago.

Yes, Sun's Java is the only one anyone should be using these days.
