My AVG free started screwing up today. Would start an update, then stop, say
Bin file missing and warn that it was not working. Tried a couple times. Un
installed it, re installed it, same thing. I finally gave up and un
installed it and took one from PC tools. has AVG gone the same was as Zone
Alarm?

Yes, it seems AVG lost its lustre.

An excellent alternative is:
Avira AntiVir® Personal - FREE Antivirus
http://www.free-av.com/

Prior installing AntiVir ensure AVG is removed *completely*.

The AVG forum has posted a notice about this problem.

Ok glad it was not just me. I figured it was not since I tried several
things to fix it. When I went to CNET to look for an alternative I noticed
they do not even mention AVG any more so I figured something must be up.
Loaded the top recommended one they had (PC tools) and let it run, it found
nothing and seems simple enough to me to set up. I guess since AVG and Zone
A were free, and worked for many years I have nothing to complain about.

Many people are seeing the same symptom, myself included. It's most likely
just a bad edition of the update file and should be cleared up with the next
update. It does not seem to affect AVG's ability to scan using the previous
signature data.

RE: You Should Convert Over 2 Avast Home Edition, It Works On Both 32 And 64
Bit Windows (It's Free 2), Just FYI.

Currently Running Avast Pro Edition On Dell OEM Windows Vista Service Pack 1
Ultimate Edition, Just FYI.

P.S. Avast Works Great On 32 Bit Open Source Linux As Well (.rpm, .deb, and
..tar Install Files Are Available).

Ok. I had already un installed it and tried a different one before I started
asking since I was at work. The Two computers at home are XP, don't know if
that will make a difference, will see when I get home.

It's one of my favorites, but as with all of them I can't take credit for
it, I saw someone else with it and liked it too.

What's the difference? When looking at CNET I noticed someone warning not to
use it, and they did not mention it either.

Go to the AVG website and manually download the latest update. Open the AVG
console and select update from directory. It will update just fine. It's
only an error in automatic download file -- a one-off that, almost
certainly, will be fixed in a day or so.

I still use AVG at a lot of site. Mostly the bought version since I
can control pop-ups about updates, and whether phishing is on. But
some sites don't want to pay and just have the latest free version.
Seems to work well. A couple of other sites recently had infections
when running old versions of Symantec that didn't have spyware
protection included. The AVG knocked it right out.
