Has MS changed their update engine?

Hi All,
I have had XP Pro since it came out and my updates have worked fine until
today. It now fails with Error number: 0x8DDD0018. I know there are various
services it says I must have running, but I have never had these services
running in the past and things used to work fine.

I refuse to enable at least two of the services because I config my machine
in a go-lean config and I don't like the idea of a BIT service running
especially when tied to an update service that automatically downloads
'updates' for me without giving me a chance to review them.

Having these services running is non-negotiationable, and if this is a real
issue that I suspect it is, I know a few tech magazines that would be very
interested to hear about this...

RP,

BITS can be set to manual but Automatic Updates must be set to Automatic
for Windows Update to function.
You can set Automatic Updates to Notify, but don't automatically
download or install them by right clicking My Computer either on the
Desktop or Start Menu, choosing Properties, then click the Automatic
Updates tab.
NO updates will be downloaded or installed without your approval. This
way you can review them.

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or
the "0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the
Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910337

Thanks MowGreen,
I will leave it on notify, but you haven't confirmed whether MS updated
the update engine. :-)
