Where has my blue box gone!?

Last week, I could click and drag a *blue box* to select multiple icons on my
desktop and in my folders.

Now, when I click and drag, I just get the default Windows XP style click
and drag: It's just a transparent box with white dots around the edge.

To my knowledge, I haven't changed any settings that could affect this.
After searching for these settings, I can't even find any. Can anybody help?

No, my Aero is working fine. I can see everything transparent, my windows
sidebar is transparent, windows flip 3D works fine; everything graphically
related is working except that blue box.

Cut and pasted, from web, for speed:

Right click on Computer, select "Properties" then chose "Advanced System
Settings", and, on the "Advanced" tab, click the "Settings" button under the
"Performance" section. Go to the "Visual Effects" tab; there you can choose
options to enable or disable certain visual effects, very similar to the
User Interface of Windows XP.
