Has Vista got chronic graphics driver problems?

I hear that a sort of service pack is coming next week to address a number
of Vista issues - including improved support for a variety of graphics card.

I hope so because I have recurring problems with system resets due to
graphics driver issues. I have an ATI 1650 Pro on one system and an nVidia
6600 GT on another - and both system regularly reset wheneve I leave them
running for any length of time.

Is this a common problem or is it just my systems?

"Improved support for a variety of graphics cards" is not Microsoft's problem.
Who makes the graphics cards? Not microsoft!

The Graphics Cards Manufacturers are responsible for writing their own
drivers that are compatiblr with Vista; it is not a microsoft prob.

Microsoft has caused a lot of problems for people with this OS, but get your
facts right; third-party drivers is NOT microsoft's fault

Ignoring the "It's not Microsoft's fault" barrage likely to come from
the uneducated but faithful I have to say that I've got 3 different
systems and have not had any real problems except the drivers aren't
fully functional. All my cards are NVidia but the Motherboards all
different. Is there anything common between your two machines? Are the
error / stop messages telling you it's video driver problems?

No service pack will deal properly with NVidia drivers, you have to
remove the old version first and live with a broken desktop while the
new ones install... requires uninstall and reboot to make sure they
install right. However I am wondering if there is some sort of
connections since you say both machines are behaving badly so for
example if they are the same motherboard it might be some other driver
causing the problems.

I have 2 6800's in SLI and dont have any issue with "resetting". Did you
install the latest drivers correctly ? 32bit here :

Not wishing to get OT here but does having 2 in SLI mode actually make
any useful difference? Didn't here (maybe 5% on frame rate) but caused
all hell with trying to use the same pair of monitors between Vista and
XP because I had to swap cables all the time. Still slower than XP
although in XP the SLI config still didn't really achieve much.

Not really...

The maximum theoretical gain with SLI is about 20%. In reality though,
you'll rarely ever see that much gain...if not even see a loss. How well
SLI works varies a lot from game to game. Some games it can work great,
some games it can cause problems. Really, someone is better off upgrading
to a higher level card than to go SLI.

A single 8800 GTX will outperform any 7000 or 6000 series SLI setup.

SLI is slower than a single card for Windows games, other games , say FEAR,
I get slightly ~8fps higher with SLI on.
If I were to give advise, SLI isnt worth the purchase of 2 graphics cards.
