HATE v14, how to return to 8.5?

Now that I made the HUGE mistake of downgrading to Messenger 2009
(build 14.0.8064.206) how do upgrade back to 8.5 (and what happened to
versions 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13?). The installer for 8.5 generates a
catastrophic failure code 0x8000ffff. Any thoughts or is it time to
use one of the 3rd party MSN IM tools that doesn't have all the JUNK
MS keeps adding that I simply don't need or want (and A-Patch and
Messenger Plus don't remove enough of it any more).

The 0x8000ffff message in this case generally means that existing installer components are
still installed. You may want to visit Add or Remove Programs/Programs and Features in the
Control Panel and make sure that the 'Windows Live Essentials' has been removed.

If it already has, you can just bypass the interface for the installer and just run the
Microsoft Installer file for 8.5 directly from here:
