I have a ipaq 4150 that I needed to change

I have a ipaq 4150 (windows ce 4.2) that I needed to change the backup battery.
I used activesync to backup before the battery change.
When I restored the ipaq, the Contacts and Appointments databases were not
restored. The error message says that these files were locked or some such
wording and to close the application and try again.
The calander and contacts applications were not running at the time.
How do I restore my contacts and appointments?
How do I trust ActiveSync in the future?
If I could extract them from the backup, I would try that as well.
Is there a spec for the format of an .stg file?
Thanks.

Hi,

You may want to refer the steps -
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/backup.htm but I am afraid you
might not be able to restore them using ActiveSync based on the error you
are experiencing. There used to be an app called STGViewer which enabled you
to extract files from the backup.stg file. As you mention its Contacts and
Appointments that you are interested in, then you will need to consider
another app that used to be available called Mobile Vault. Try performing a
search and check if you are able to get hold of it.

For future backup, you might want to consider more reliable third party
software like PIM Backup - http://www.dotfred.net/

Thanks for responding.
I have backed up and restored in the past with no problem.
There must be someone that knows why this happens.
STGViewer will allow me to get individual files, but not the databases.
You mention Mobile Vault. I found a utility called HPCVault. I assume it's
the same?
It didn't seem to work. It's help says it works with WinCE 1.0 and 2.0.
I'm using WinCE 4.2.
If I could find the file format for the Backup.stg file, I would write a
program to extract the data I need.
Is the data compressed?

Thanks!

Hi,

I think it might be the same as they were from the same developers. If you
want, I have a trial copy that I can send it to you. Just drop me and email
and you can check it out. Sorry but am not aware of the backup.stg file
format.
