How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906602

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

0x8024A000 -2145083392 WU_E_AU_NOSERVICE
AU was unable to service incoming AU calls

80246005 = SUS_E_DM_NONETWORK
Network connection was not available

1. Stop the Automatic Update Service

Click Start, select Run, type in: services.msc
then press enter
Right click the Automatic Updates Service and stop the service

2. Click Start, select Run, type in: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
then press enter
Open the Datastore folder and delete its contents.

3. Click Start, select Run, type in: type services.msc
then press enter
Right click the Automatic Update Service and start the service

Try running the Updates again.

Always remember if in doubt, you can always copy the contents of the Datastore folder to
another area on your hard drive as a backup.

Also see: You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
When you examine the %systemroot%\Windowsupdate.log file, you may see an entry for one of
the following errors:. 0x80096001
.. 0x80096005 . 0x80096010 . 0x800B0001 . 0x800B0003 . 0x800B0004 .
800B0109 . 0x8007f0da

0x80070005 - Access Denied
Check points:

Make sure the Administrators group has Full Control permissions to the Auto Update
registry key.
1. Use an account that has administrative credentials to log on to the Windows XP
computer.
2. Click Start, click Run, and then type the following command: regedit
3. Click OK.
4. Navigate to the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update
5. Right-click the Auto Update folder, and then click Permissions.
6. Make sure that the Administrators group has Full Control.

Also check especially if the WindowsUpdate.log file will also read errors 0x80070005 and
0x80080005
(for Windows XP & Windows Server 2003
Locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate.
On the menu, click Edit. Click Permissions.
For Administrator and System, select the Allow check boxes next to Full Control and Read
permissions. NOTE: In certain instances, these check boxes are grayed out. Ensure all
accounts have appropriate permissions.
Click Apply, Click OK, Close the Registry Editor.
Restart the system.

If you're using Windows XP Pro make sure it hasn't been disabled by Group Policy:-
Start/Run/gpedit.msc. User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows
Components/Windows Update. In the right pane, double click, Remove access to all Windows
Update Features and set it to the default "not configured"

Another workaround is to use Regmon and see for what keys get "Access Denied", or
Restore the permission back to default
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222/EN-US/
How to reset security settings back to the defaults - WinXP Professional

Regmon is a Registry monitoring utility that will show you which applications are
accessing your Registry, which keys they are accessing, and the Registry data that they
are reading and writing - all in real-time
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Regmon.html

If you're using Windows XP Home Edition check to see you haven't got the key
"DisableWindowsUpdateAccess"
Locate this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\
WindowsUpdate

If you see a key in the right pane called "DisableWindowsUpdateAccess", then to access the
Windows Update site, the data value should be a zero "0".
If the value is set to a one "1", then you are currently configured to DENY access to the
Windows Update site.
To change the data value, double-click on the key name and set the value to a zero "0".

Now locate this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
Do you see the key called: "NoWindowsUpdate"
To access the Windows Update site, the data value should be a zero "0".
If the value is set to a one "1", then your PC is currently configured to DENY access to
the Windows Update site.
To change the data value, double-click on the key name and set the value to a zero "0".

After you have changed the data values, close regedit and reboot the computer and try
Windows Update again.
