The 'Windows Update' icon in the toolbar tells me that a update is
available.

Even though I tell it to install, it never does nor does the notice ever
leave.

The update is
security update for Msoft xml core services 4.0 Service Pack2 kb954430

but for some reason, the install never takes place.

Whether I tell it to install upon closing down Vista or while Vista is
running.
I always get the same notice that this update should be installed.

Can I fix this? Please.

Hi,
Download the file form MS downloads not windows update.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/S...displaylang=en
Search for kb954430

I printed out both of your instructions
First just downloaded the update from the url.
That did the same, it says it's updated but icon reappeared

then I followed the instructions on the msoft support page

I got the window which created a restore point and then downloaded the
update.

the icon indicating a 'update' was available disappeared
and then reappeared a few moments later.

duh...

really weird

I followed the instructions and did as you two gentlemen suggested.

That darn Icon returned moments afterward and Vista says I still need to
install that update.
