I have a Win Update, can't get on internet

I have a Win2000 system, a Linksys TA/router and a cable modem. I had to
reinstall Windows and after I updated (about 37 of them) I couldn't get on
the internet even though the connection showed active. Using ipconfig
/release then /renew, it said that there was a DHCP error. I heard it might
be because of KB898461 but that seems to be for Win XP. I reinstalled
Windows (Thus, I have Internet), but I am scared to update Windows. If it
happens again, how do I work around it?
