*** Which edition of Windows and what Service Pack level is it now on,
please ? ***

See:

Try a clean boot to see if 3rd party software is interfering with the
download of updates:

XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
Vista/Win 7: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

IF a 3rd party firewall is being used, ensure that the native Windows
firewall is enabled after doing the clean boot steps.

If a clean boot doesn't resolve the error, *strongly suggest* a scan of
the system with Malwarebytes Anti-malware:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Click the " Download free version " button.
*Save* mbam-setup.exe
Once the download completes close *all* open browsers and programs.
Now run mbam-setup.exe and allow it to update during it's installation.
Once the installation completes, MBAM should open. If not, open it.
Be sure the Quick scan option is marked and then click the Scan button.
When the scan completes, click the Show results button.
Ensure anything detected is checked and then click the Remove selected
button.
Restart the system if requested to.

Search for posts about 643 or 1603.

The leading 0xC8 is just a difference in diagnostics provided
in your case. Either representation of your code will mean Fatal error
and you will have to look for more information provided with the context
of any references to the representations that you find.

Good luck
