Actually the msimg32.dll is not a component of Messenger and is not installed by Microsoft.
It's actually a component of Windows and third-party developers make use of a feature in
Windows that allows libraries to be called first if they exist in the applications folder and
then by the Windows system folder. For instance, Messenger Plus Live uses this to load
itself into Messenger. There's also third-party documentation on the web available so that
anyone can do this.
What I suggest you do as a starting point is to head over to Messenger folder, right-click
this file, choose Properties, and choose the Details tab to see what the file is identifying
itself as. Also, if there's a Digital Signatures tab, take a look at that as that will at
least validate where it came from.
