Does Vista have a setting for when to spin down HDs? If so, where?
If not, do the HDs keep spinning as long as the CPU is running?

I'm just curious, since I never let the HDs spin down on my non-VISTA PCs.

Such an option would most likely be available in the BIOS of your computer.

Ah, found it: more hidden than on XP, under Advanced Settings.

The default spin down in Vista is 20 minutes.

BTW: This will also cause some file operations to take longer as the drive
has to spin back up for the operation to complete. On My main computer the
drives (four of them) have to spin back up to shut down the computer,
thereby increasing the shutdown time. If I have the drives spinning
constantly all these actions are pretty much instantaneous.
