I keep reading documentation that referes to a separate heartbeat network in
clustering. Is this a requirement in Windows 2008 failover clustering?

Hello Go,

Not needed like in the 'old' way of clustering, you need redundant connectivity.

See here:

Hi Go,

You need a private and a public network. In most cases when you read
heartbeat network they men private network.
2 nics or 3 if you use ISCSI per node is what you need.

I am really confused as to what the purpose of the heartbeat network is. I
created a heartbeat network with a cross-over cable.

I have a 2 node failover cluster. If I unplug the network cable of the
public network - the cluster fails over to the other node. This makes
complete sense to me but what is the function of the heartbeat network.

Heartbeat Network was a requirement of clustering in W2K3 and bellow. As of
W2K8 and above no need to configure heartbeat network. You still might want
to have a redundant network. In W2K8 cluster sends heartbeat along each
network it uses.
