"Maniac SwordBreaker",
I am sorry you are hitting this issue, and appreciate the troubleshooting
steps you have already taken to try to resolve this. I need a little more
information though:
1. When you mention that you added "all the windows update-related addresses
to the trusted sites" and "cleared the checkbox," you are talking about the
trusted sites location in Internet Explorer on the client machine, right?
2. When you mentioned that you "cleared everything unnecessary in the
proxy," does that mean within Internet Explorer under LAN settings?
3. Does your afflicted machine go out through a proxy server on your
network, or direct to your ISP through firewall software installed on the
machine itself? (For the purposes of this question, please ignore the
Windows Firewall)
4. What did you mean when you said you did the "cmd.exe thing?"
Basically, we need to understand if you are "going direct" or going through
a proxy to determine where the issue exists.
-Windows Update website does not require authentication for the
v5.windowsupdate site (Windows XP), but certain proxy servers require that.
- If you are using a proxy server to go out onto the Internet, then certain
services and ports are needed. If this does not fit the rules on that proxy
server, then the proxy server needs an exception item that lists the
download sites:
--*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
--download.microsoft.com
--https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Please reply back with answers to these questions.
Thanks,
Pat Walters [MSFT]
