Using IE8 for windows updates, I get the following;

Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

Windows Update is the online extension of Microsoft Windows that helps you get
the most out of your computer.

Follow these steps to access Windows Update through the Help and support Center:
Click Start, and then click Help and support.
If you are running Windows XP, click Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows
Update.
If you are running a Windows Server 2003 family product, click Windows Update.

I followed the instructions and I got the same message

What's wrong with MS updates?

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista x64 SP2) when
posting to this newsgroup.

[crosspost to IE General]

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

That could be a symptom of a problem with your User-Agent string.
Go here to check it.

http://www.fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx

Make sure you capture the whole Useragent: item
(now conveniently highlighted in red, I see!)

You can also compare what you get when you enter this from
the Address bar:

javascript:navigator.userAgent

which should be the same as that Object Model UA String button
but just easier to capture.

Note that if you have IE8 you can use its compatibility mode
or even use the User Agent Picker tool that the page refers to.

Good luck

I have MS Security Essentials installed;
no 3rd party firewall;
Previously Norton 2007/8 was installed but removed completely;
No restore point for IE8

Did you also download/run the Norton Removal Tool?

Was MSE installed and running in the background when you installed IE8? If
not, what anti-virus was installed at the time and was it running in the
background when you installed IE8?

IN RE Robert's last reply, see this recent & related thread (but please do
NOT reply to it):

Try using the User Agent Picker tool--unless your web app needs
to see all those .NET and Office version information strings.

Also, WTH is an "Acoo browser"? ; )

Do you have that version?

In any case, as long as you are having problems with IE8, I would try
uninstalling that and see if you have any better results without it installed.

Good luck
