I've got the same problem and mine says installation failed for both
SP1 & 2. And I got thsi nagging yellow alert sign with the exclamation
mark telling me to update and the whole process is repeated over and
over again. I even followed the step by step to clear up the internet
files, etc and nothing works.

I've even been through MS Office Support and I've tried everything, except
for deleting and re-installing since I have bought upgrades forever (my only
full program was about 10 years ago, Office 95, I think). MS Office Support
no longer responds to me (I was hoping they were working on something, but
NO!, haven't heard from them in about a month).

Have you tried the following?

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. In the list of services, double-click Office Source Engine.
3. View the Startup type list.
4. If the startup type is set to Disabled, change the startup
type to Manual. To do this, click Manual in the Startup type
list, and then click OK.
5. Try to install the Office update again.

That's the first of three possible resolutions at this link:

It still won't work and now I'll have to hunt for the Cd which was
installed by the technician which I don't think I have. Can anyone tell
me how to get rid of the yellow alert sign which keeps telling me to
install.

Youre not the only one, I've tried twice (without the benefit of broadband so
as you can guess 50000 plus Kbs takes FOREVER!!) and my laptop keeps crashing
after about 3.5 hrs download time (lucky person who was told 40 odd mins, try
409 mins!!!). I'm fed up of it. Do they do a free CD version of service pack
2 instead of free download?? If so anyone any ideas on how to get hold of
one. Its got to be quicker than downloading........

OK, so I finally had the time to do this (it took several hours), and IT
WORKED (after 10 or so tries for about 6 weeks)!!:

First, run SAVE MY SETTINGS WIZARD (it will remember where you have stuff
and what settings you have for your Office programs).

I uninstalled Office 2003
I uninstalled Frontpage 2003
I uninstalled Infopath 2003

I restarted my computer.

I installed Office 2003
I ran Windows Update and BINGO, I was able to install SP2!!

I installed Infopath 2003
I ran Windows Update and BINGO, I was able to install SP2 (for Infopath)!!

I installed Frontpage 2003
I ran Windows Update and BINGO, I was able to install SP2 (for Frontpage)!!

MICROSOFT NEEDS TO KNOW THIS!! SOMETHING FROM EITHER FRONTPAGE OR INFOPATH
IS INTERFERING WITH SP2 INSTALL!!

I think Pam H may be onto something here. Instead of uninstalling all of my
office products at once (as one KB article suggested), I uninstalled them one
at a time:

Uninstalled InfoPath -> still got the error
Uninstalled OneNote -> still got the error
Uninstalled FrontPage -> installed without a problem.

Didnt' have to uninstall Office Pro.
