David,
Open the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS folder (directory) with Notepad. Copy&paste the last 20-30 lines or so into your reply. Hopefully, someone will be able to provide some assistance for you. Hi Robin,
I am logging on as 'administrator' of the PC. I've tried even logging on as local administrator without success. Contents of the file KB913580.log are below. It does say something to the effect of not having proper rights, but ... I'm logging on as administrator. I also double checked the registry entries ....HKCR\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck and HKCR\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1 and it shows me (me as the administrators group, plus added the local administrator exclusively and gave full rights) as having full rights. Oh, thanks for the help ... In KB913580.log that is shown to be because: 1.172: Failed To Enable SE_SECURITY_PRIVILEGE 1.187: Setup encountered an error: You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator. So it does seem that you did not have Administrator privileges at that time. Your post of KB913580.log goes on to show another installation attempt on 2006/05/25 at 08:26:27, which appears to have run successfully to completion. Please confirm whether or not you now have KB913580 installed successfully. > I also double checked the registry entries > ...HKCR\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck and > HKCR\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1 > and it shows me (me as the administrators group, plus added the local > administrator exclusively and gave full rights) as having full rights. These are not relevant to 913580. They relate only to Windows Genuine Advantage installation problems. -- Robin Walker [MVP Networking] |

I also receive this error, even when I login using the hidden Administrator
account (by pressing CTRL+AL+DEL twice at the login prompt). I don't know hom much more "Administrator" you can get. Here is the contents of the log file of one of the files that failed to install... 0.625: 2006/06/09 04:47:37.640 (local) 0.625: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\94993dc41 f085fded913ffe873108208\update\update.exe (version 6.2.29.0) 0.625: Failed To Enable SE_SHUTDOWN_PRIVILEGE 0.625: Failed To Enable SE_TAKE_OWNERSHIP_PRIVILEGE 0.625: Setup encountered an error: You do not have permission to update Windows XP. I think that this issue is related... As Administrator, I have attempted to
install Service Pack 2 on my computer but get the message: "You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator." My current OS is XP Professional (version 2002) with Service Pack 1, product ID 55274-OEM-0048493-14610 |

Problem solved! The problem was caused by Administrators not being able to
modify certain files and objects, due to a change in user rights assignment. How I fixed it: 1. In Control Panel, go to Administrative Tools 2. Open Local Secutity Settings 3. Select Local Policies, then User Rights Assignment 4. At the bottom of the list is an item called "Take ownership of files or other objects." Ensure that this task can be performed by "Administrators." So how did this problem occur? (in my case) Some time ago, I discovered a loophole in Windows' file security options. I noticed that although it is possible to make folders and files inaccessable to other users, this can be easily countermanded by the fact that any Administrator can take ownership of another user's files. Once an administrator takes ownership of a file or folder, they can redefine its security options. In an attempt to prevent such a privacy breach by other administrators on my computer, I removed Adminsistrators from the list of persons able to "Take ownership of files or other objects." This inadvertantly prevented me from updating Windows. |
