HELP, CHM files are broken since some unknown LiveUpdatepatch!!!

I experience the same exact problem.
I've ran a massive OS liveupdate after installing a new laptop from scratch, and now any attempt to see a .chm file FREEZE the PC for several minutes. I've installed also Visual Studio 2005 in a desperate attempt of restoring help system, but unsuccessfully. Please help, this is driving me nuts, i wont reformat everything for this stupid issue... does anyone know how to correctly troubleshooting this ?
