Help with cmd in vista recovery console

After fuddling with my computer's system files, I discovered that I was
unable to start Explorer.exe in Windows because shell32.dll was
accidentally renamed shell32.old. With not a single system restore
point, I attempted to use the cmd recovery console on the Vista install
DVD to fix it. Being not a very experienced user, I thought I'd change
the directory to the system32 folder first, since it is originally at
"X:\Sources". However, whenever I typed in "cd c:\windows\system32" and
pressed Enter, nothing would happen and the next line would still start
with "X:\Sources".

So my question is, how can I get into system32 so I can name the file
back to its original name using "ren"? I can't do anything while being
stuck at "X:\Sources" or whatever... Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

No, he said that he typed...

cd c:\windows\system32

...to change directory.

He still needs to type...

c:

....to change the console to using that drive.

No, that just takes you to the higher level directory. Doing a Change
Directory with the full path will take you straight there. This is
irrelevant anyway, as the OP's problem is that he wasn't switching the C:
drive, which is done simply by typing C: <RETURN>.
