Help - Constant (annoying) Vista Updates

Hi, I hope i am posting this to the right place. I tried a search for
this issue but wasn't able to find any previous threads on this. For
the last two weeks, every time I turn off my laptop and then turn it
back on Windows downloads updates. It takes about 20 minutes and it
happens every time I shut my laptop off - sometimes 3-4 times a day!
Then once I log on to the internet I get a message that says I have
updates waiting. Like right now it says I have 20 updates waiting.
The other day it said I had 20 updates so I chose to go ahead and
installed the updates. I shut off my computer when I was finished and
the next morning when I turned it on it again went straight into
installing updates.

How can I fix this? I went to the Windows Updates settings and set it
for "Install New Updates: Every Saturday at 3:00 a.m." I want the
computer to automatically install updates but I have NO idea why it's
constant.

Please, please help! I'll admit that I'm not the most computer savvy
but I know this is annoying.

Are you sure you understand the Windows Update Process? The cycle is the
updates are installed, the computer reboots itself and then there is a
cycle at boot-up that continues to apply the updates until the Windows
desktop is reached. If it gets to the desktop, then there should be a
notification message that updates have been applied.

Have you gone to the Windows Update site, which you can do to view the
list of updates for their status of success or failure? You can also
right-click a line, and it will tell what the failure is if the update
failed to install.

You can also *Hide* the update so that it doesn't get installed, and the
update will go away.

What you should do is take the Windows Update off of automatic updates
and set it to notify you when updates are available. That way, you can
go to the Windows Update site, see the list of updates, select the
updates you want, and see it has it happens to determine what is going on.

You can also go to the Control Panel/Programs and Features and select
View Installed Updates to see what has updated successfully.

I will do that. I'll get a message that says that Windows is ready t
install updates. I'll click on the Windows Update file in the Contro
Panel and it will say I have 20 updates. I'll click to install th
updates- it'll go through the process you describe above. Then I'll g
check the Updates file in my control panel and there won't be any. The
I'll work like normal on my computer and then shut down my laptop whe
finished. Then at some point I'll go and start my computer and i
automatically goes to the "Windows is installing updates. Step 1 of 3
and it goes through that but it takes like 15 minutes. When my comput
finally gets to the desktop and then I get another message that ther
are updates waiting to install. I click to see what's there and i
says I have 20 updates waiting. I always seem to have 20 waiting eve
though it seems to go through the update process correctly every time.

I did this as well. I switched it to notify me and get an approva
before downloading any updates. However, whenever I turn off my compute
and turn it back on, the first thing it does is go into installin
updates. It never makes it to the desktop until after it completes th
updates.

There is one screen where it installs the updates and then it goes to
screen that says "Windows did not correctly shut down analyzing th
problem" and it won't let you cancel that option. It shuts down fin
when I shut down. It's just as soon as it starts up it installs update
for 15 minutes and then goes to that gray screen and then starts up an
