Are you sure you understand the Windows Update Process? The cycle is the
updates are installed, the computer reboots itself and then there is a
cycle at boot-up that continues to apply the updates until the Windows
desktop is reached. If it gets to the desktop, then there should be a
notification message that updates have been applied.
Have you gone to the Windows Update site, which you can do to view the
list of updates for their status of success or failure? You can also
right-click a line, and it will tell what the failure is if the update
failed to install.
You can also *Hide* the update so that it doesn't get installed, and the
update will go away.

What you should do is take the Windows Update off of automatic updates
and set it to notify you when updates are available. That way, you can
go to the Windows Update site, see the list of updates, select the
updates you want, and see it has it happens to determine what is going on.
You can also go to the Control Panel/Programs and Features and select
View Installed Updates to see what has updated successfully.
