From MVP Rick Rogers -

*****
The shell entry may be damaged in the registry. From Task Manager, click
'new task' on the applications tab. Type regedit and click ok. Agree to the
UAC prompt, then expand the branches to reach this one:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Click on the Winlogon key, then on the right find the "shell" string. Double
click it, change the value data to read "explorer.exe" (without the quotes)
and click ok. Then close the registry editor and restart the system by
entering another new task as 'shutdown /r'.

Malke,
I have a similar problem. Blank screen after start up. All I can do is
ctrl-alt-delete to get to Task Manager. I tried the recommended solution;
howeer, no change. Is there another solution? FYI: the Shell entry already
had 'explorer.exe'.

Hi, Marque - There can be various reasons for this issue. Since the Original
Poster ("OP") really gave us no information about his/her machine, your
cause might be entirely different even though it sounds like the same
thing. Please make a new post with all pertinent details instead of tacking
your issue onto the OP's. Here are links to show you what details to
include:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Usenet
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555375 - How to Ask a Question

And always start with:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

I'm having the same problem, but when I change the Shell string from cmd.exe
/k start cmd.exe, to explorer.exe, it just goes back to cmd.exe...etc. when I
restarted. Also, when I put explorer.exe in New Task in task manager it says
not found...etc...and when I try C:\windows\explorer.exe instead, it says
ordinal 874 not found in SHELL32.dll. I also have to do all of this off the
Vista disc from the Command Prompt.

This is on Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade on a Sony Vaio with a P4 3.0ghz
w/HT processor, 2 gigs of ram, and an Nvidia 7900GS gpu.

I know I responded to a post your made about this issue in another thread.
Please go back to that original thread so as not to create fragmentation of
the help. If you've forgotten where you posted, you can search for your
name in Google Groups Advanced Search.
