I demoted a domian contoller the other day
using dcpromo

then I built a new domain controller using the same name

All the roles were moved to my other domain contrller prior to the dcpromo
of the old dc

Now today I needed to bring up the demoted dc on the network to check some
settings and it thinks it is still a domain controller

Now my new domain controller is dead

the netlognon server fails

I am at wits end

need any help asap

Thanks

Tom

Tom,

How long did you wait before you promoted the new one?
Did you make sure that the old DC was truly removed?
Did you remove its reference from Sites and Services prior to promoting?

If you are going to try to re-promote it, I would suggest to do a complete
clean up by running the Metadata cleanup procedure to pull out all info of
the current name. This will ensure it is truly has been removed.

Sometimes when trying to bring in another DC with an identical name, can
cause issues if not enough time was alotted to allow replication to occur.
I've seen this before and it is a PITA to clean up.

Hello Thomas,

If you need to use the same name as before you have to check before, that
all information about the demoting is replicated to all DCs. Additional i
would personal remove the server complete form the domain so it is not longer
stored anyware in the database even as member server, if you like to use
the same name again for a new DC.

So kick out both DCs now according to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555846/en-us

and start again with promoting a new one after all changes are replicated
to the other DCs.

Best regards
