Hi,

For about a year now I have only been able to get Windows Update and
Microsoft Update to work once or twice. Everytime I try I get the error code
0x80072EE2.

I have read through most other posts regarding this error code and done just
about everything I can.

I have now completely reinstalled my Windows XP Pro, it was originally
bought as an upgrade to Win NT. First I tried Windows Update which did
download the BITS and WGA components but would not update the PC at all.

My installation was NOT SP2 so I updated it using a SP2 disk I downloaded
ages ago. Next I installed the few motherboard drivers and then updated IE 6
to IE 7.

I use a DSL504 router to connect to the Internet which today I reverted back
to its factory defaults.

I am able to connect to Google and other web sites without any problem and
also able to download email using Outlook.

I did enable automatic updates just to see if this would make a difference
and at first it seemed to solve the problem. I was able to update my PC with
about 90+ updates. I then switched off automatic updates and Microsoft
Update stopped. Switching it back on, however, makes no difference. I am
assuming that this was just a coincidence.

I have no firewall installed or antivirus program or any other program for
that matter other than the basic Windows install.

I have read that other people have struggled with this particular error code
and feel quite frustrated myself with it.

Can anyone help me get to the bottom of this? I can post the windows error
log if this is of any help!

Regards FarmerJo

try disabling any extra toolbars and if that does not help try setting the
MTU on your router to 1400

Hi,

I did try playing with the MTU figure in both the router and on the PC and
the problem has now been sorted.
