Since I'm getting this error number now too - I managed to fix the most hated
0x8024402c- Error somehow by risking the safety of my system by deactivating
my firewall - I'd be happy to hear how I fix this new Error!
I'm running Windows2000 Professional.
I was able to get the running Services from the net start > list command you
mentioned.
the following services are running
AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic Service
AntiVir Scheduler
Automatic Updates
COM+
DHCP-Client
Service "Execute as"
DNS-Client
Printerqueue
Ereignisprotokoll
Protected Memory
BITS
Network-connections
Norton Unerase Protection
NVIDIA Display Driver Service
O&O Defrag
OracleOraHome817BASISAgent
OracleOraHome817BASISDataGatherer

Überwachung verteilter Verknüpfungen (Client)
well since I'm using a german Win2000 I tried to translate as much services
to their english names as I could, on the other hand I'm quite sure that the
remaining untranslated services have no influence on the above mentioned
error with windows update
I was able to install the following updates manually
InternetExplorer 6 SP1
Bits + Winhttp (KB 842773 - x86-DEU)
Windows2000 rollup (KB 891861-v2-x86-DEU)

I tried most of the mentioned stuff on my system.
- delete all chars from Proxy-Exception .. and so on
deleted at least 10 times the SoftwareDistribution-Folder in my Winnt-Dir
manually starting the services for update and so on.
nothing works!
So ... How can I get Windows / Microsoft Update to work again?
If you need other information about my system - please let me know!
