Hello All,

I have WLM on Win 7. The laptop hit a bug/virus/hardware failure and
had to replace it.

The error is so bad I cannot even startup WLM due to a missing dll.
As a side note, not even IE (or any browser works).

So while I am manually copying and importing the messages (I think it
will work), I have no idea how to MANUALLY extract the contacts and
account info from the sick laptop, and import it to the new one.

Again, I can't start WLM in the old machine, so the export option
doesn't apply. If anyone knows anyway to manually extract, then
import the CONTACTS and EMAIL ACCOUNT info, I would be SO SO SO
grateful,.

Many thanks ahead of time,

Sergio

Any email messages would exist as single *.eml files in the accounts
subfolders (Inbox, Sent Items, etc) when viewed in Windows Explorer
(Fyi..you can enable the Subject or Title field in Windows Explorer to see
the title to avoid having to deal with the numerically named messages).
*.eml files can be dragged/dropped to a usb thumb or external drive and
later dragged/dropped back into WLM on a functional computer.

Newsgroup 'Sent messages' would also reside in the Storage Folders 'Sent
Items' folder (they have a file extension of *.nws and also can be
dragged/dropped.

Recovering Contacts, if not previously using a Live ID (they'd be stored
online) or exported to a csv file or individual vcf files is not possible.
Email accounts, likewise, if not previously exported to an iaf file will
need to be setup anew in WLM on a functional machine.

There's of course no need to recover contacts associated with a Live ID; they should be safely backed up at contacts.live.com. However, at least one user has been able to recover the default (not-signed-in) contacts from a defunct hard disk. It will only be possible if the versions of WLE on both machines is the same, and preferably the same build. If Sergio is and was using WLMail 2011, he has to copy the hidden system folder DBStore from
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts\Default\15.4\
on the old drive to the same location on the new one. This should be done with no Windows Live programs or services running (stop them in services.msc if necessary). When finished, run wlarp.exe to Repair... Windows Live Essentials, then reboot and test.
It is also possible (but not straightforward) to extract contacts data from the WLC databases using a third-party utility.

Sorry for improper format. It seems my headache is worse. I copied
the entire folder from the broken machine, then used the imPort
feature on the new one.

I have all these folders now with no messages in them.

Is there another way to do this?

Thanks

Sergio
