HI, pantheman.
This sounds like a job for...Disk Management! (diskmgmt.msc)
I've never had anything 1394 or firewire, so there may be some quirks I'm
not aware of. But, ever since Windows 2000, Disk Management has been the
tool for managing all kinds of disks, even optical drives, USB thumb drives,
cameras... Just about anything that can be assigned a "drive" letter.
Maybe you are already using DM, but you didn't mention it.
Among the settings available in Disk Management (and a couple of other
places) is "Policies", where we can set removable devices to Optimize for
Quick Removal or for Performance. (In DM, right-click the disk (left column
in Graphical View) and choose Properties.) I'm not sure how that would
impact your problem, but you mentioned the "kerplunk sound" when plugging or
unplugging the devices.
Does your dual-booting system use the Microsoft system, always booting from
the same System Volume and then branching to the chosen OS? Or do you
change the BIOS to switch to a different boot device each time?
