Are you installing Vista Home Basic from the same CD that came with the
Laptop?

Or is it a CD that someone has given you or lent you?

There are multiple versions of Vista for different markets (Retail, OEM,
Enterprise, Developer) and you cannot mix serial numbers between the
different versions.

I had this problem after my recovery partition was corrupt and had to order
a recover CD from HP and resintall it. It gave me the option of activating
by telephone, during which I had to enter loads of numbers into the phone,
then some more different ones back into the computer. Took some time but
this process (surprisingly) worked for me and my Vista is now activated. So
try the phone activation.

It sounds as if you have tried to use an OEM key (the key on your computer)
to activate a retail copy of Vista (the DVD you borrowed) - and that won't
work nor can it be made to work. You would need to contact Lenovo and find
out how to get a restore disk set for your laptop and use that, along with
your OEM key, to reinstall Windows. Or you could buy a copy in the store
and use that key to activate the borrowed copy installed now. Those are
your options.

If you formatted the hard drive and lost the 'recovery partition' then you
need to contact Lenovo to see if they can supply you with a recovery DVD. It
is pointless trying to use a friend's copy of Vista because the OEM product
key number on the back of (or bottom of) your PC is not linked to your
friends copy.

However, I noticed elsewhere that you mention '2 days activation'. If it is
simple case that you can' activate your copy of Vista then use the telephone
option instead. This link from my website will help you with activation:

Do you think it or know it?

My advice is to call LENOVO and ask them how to recover.

Not with your key but you can install any version of Vista for 30 days and
can actually do it for 90 or more and the new SP1 will let you do it forever
if you don't mind nagging.

Your choices are exactly what I outlined, none other exist. Either get the
Lenovo restore discs and use them, or buy a copy of Vista and use that key
to activate your copy, assuming that you borrowed a store-bought copy of
Vista.

On my Thinkpad, all I need to do in order to reload my computer with the
restore image is to press the blue "Access IBM" button right when I turn
the computer on during the bios screen. Have you tried that yet?
