"A Google search led directly to the following fix (for Vista):

Apparently Vista's "auto-tuning" networking feature doesn't play nice
with some routers. Not sure if it is a bug in Vista, a bug in Messenger
or a bug in the router firmware.

- Click start
- Type: cmd
- Right-click cmd.exe when it appears under Applications
- Click Run As Administrator
- Type the following: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
- Press enter
- Restart your computer"

I am running Win XP (SP3), so I can't confirm whether it works.

> Bob, Many thanks for this. It worked a treat on two computers I have running Vista. I thought the problem was Vista as a third computer running XP SP3 on the same LAN had no problem. As you say the exact trouble is difficult to pinpoint. The router in question is the excellent Netgear DG834 onto which I had installed the latest firmware. As far as I can tell the firmware made no difference, but disabling autotuning did!
