Greetings Brandon,
What you're describing could be problems with a router and broken firmware. To check,
disable your network connection or unplug your network cable, then start Messenger and see
what happens.
If Messenger then doesn't freeze, then check your router's manufacturers website for some new
firmware or even just power cycle the router.
If you do have the same problem or you don't have a router anyway, also try unplugging any
video capture devices (aka webcams) that you might have too.
