Help: Messenger hangs 30sec after launch whether or not I login

Thought I had this problem licked in a previous post, but after installing
8.5 beta 1, it came back. I can't get rid of it by reverting to 8.1 nor by
trying the fix that worked before.

ISSUE: LIve Messenger 8.1 (and 8.5) hang about 30 seconds after launch.
DETAILS:
* Happens whether I log in or not (meaning, will happen after 30
seconds just sitting at the Login prompt w/ no user interaction)
* If I do launch and login quickly, my contacts are shown but quickly hangs
before I can initiate a conversation
* This started happening after upgrading from 8.1 to 8.5 beta 1

WHAT I TRIED TO RESOLVE IT:

* Uninstalled 8.5, reinstalled 8.1 - nope.
* System restore to 3 days ago, before the problem existed. - Nope
* With 8.1 installed, deleted %userprofile%\Contacts\(passportID)
then deleted %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\
Messenger folder. Relaunched. - Nope

Note: That last step worked before when I saw this same problem happening a
month ago in 8.1. It no longer works. HELP, I've had to resort to using
Trillian instead which is working perfectly.

Sorry, shoud have mentioned the environment...
Windows XP SP2, IE7, Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM.

Greetings Brandon,

What you're describing could be problems with a router and broken firmware. To check,
disable your network connection or unplug your network cable, then start Messenger and see
what happens.

If Messenger then doesn't freeze, then check your router's manufacturers website for some new
firmware or even just power cycle the router.

If you do have the same problem or you don't have a router anyway, also try unplugging any
video capture devices (aka webcams) that you might have too.
