This is the system I have:

XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
Dell DXG051
BIOS v Dell Inc A02, 9/15/2005
SMBIOS v 2.3

The problem is that the last few days, it keeps telling me I have Updates.
These are the updates they have listed:

Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806)
Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (KB929300)

Why is it telling me that I need updates for Service Pack 1? When I bought
my computer, I got Service Pack 2.

Can someone please help me?

Thank you in advance.

You have more products on your computer than just Windows XP (the operating
system) for which you may need service packs and patches. You received
Windows XP with ServicePack 2 when you got your computer. You have speeled
out in your own post that the two products that are stating they need
Service Pack 1 are:

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

There are two products that are installed on your system at this time -
installed on top of Windows XP - the Operating System (OS.)

Service Pack 3 will be released within a few months for Windows XP.
Microsoft Office (dependent on version - 2000/XP/2003/2007) has several
Service Packs (1, 2, 3, etc.) Pay attention to what you read and you will
be told exactly what you are getting.

Shenan,

I know I am ignorant to the "guts" of the computer, but I didn't really
understand your answer. Are you saying that the updates that are telling me
are needed are okay for my system? I just want to make sure. My computer
seems to be really acting up the last few days so I wanted to make sure it
was okay to update them.

Hi Nancy, SP2 you mention related to Windows XP, the framework updates are
related to another part of the windows os - see
Benefits of the Microsoft .NET Framework
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829019

You mention that your computer has been acting up the last few days. Would
you care to explain in a little more detail what you mean by that statement.
Installing the Framework updates won't fix any underlying problems you may
have.
Framework upates are optional.

Hi Nancy,

Let me break this apart for you and maybe you can understand a little
better.
>>>Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806)<<<

Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 is an application all by it's self, meaning it
is not
WindowsXP and the 2.0 stands for the version of that app. Now, there is a
Service Pack available for the 2.0 version and it is Service Pack 1.

There is also a Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0. This one is version 3.0 and
it to has a Service Pack 1 available from MS.

When XP came out, some time down the road Microsoft created a
Service Pack, which contained several fixes for the WindowsXP
operating system, this was called Service Pack 1 . Later on they created yet
another and call it Service Pack 2 which is the one you have installed.

Don't be confused by the words "Service Pack" which I think you are.
There can be many Service Packs, but they are for different things. In
this case you were offered one for Microsoft.NET Framework and not
WindowsXP.

BTW, in another reply you said "I know I am ignorant to the "guts" of the
computer"
Well there is nothing wrong with that at all, in fact you are smarter than
you give
yourself credit for. You saw something pop up, you didn't understand, you
then
came here to seek help. NOW THAT'S SMART :>)

You've got the wrong end of the stick. Just install both updates.

Thanks all of you for replying. I replied after TauRian's reply, but it
didn't show up. Anyway, I tried installing both. Both failed:

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806)
Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x643

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (KB929300)
Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x643

Why won't they install? I have tried many times as suggested, but it still
isn't working.

SG,

I tried that link. It suggests I uninstall all .NET Framework files from
the Add/Delete in the Control Panel. It would only allow me to uninstall the
first one (Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1). I also have 2.0 and 3.0. It will
not allow me to uninstall either. Any suggestions?

Nancy

Hi,

Did you uninstall Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1?
If so try the Windows Update again and see if it works.
