Hello Group:

Help needed, our SBS 2003 server had a harware failure with the RAID system.
The system is functional on one disk of a hardware mirror. The second
channel on the RAID is defunct. Rather than repair the hardware, we have
decided to purchase a new server.

I would like to migrate or restore from the old server (or backup files) all
the system functionality of the old system (users, groups, sharepoint,
exchange etc) on the new hardware. Can anyone point me in the right
direction for resources, how to's etc.

TIA

Keith Waldron

Hi there,

if you also consider third party tools, I "love" Symantecs Life State Server
Recovery Advanced. It' s absolutely easy to handle and works fine! We used it
for that purpose already.

Thanx, I will look into that solution further... Can I ask you if you know
if it will run a restore to completely new and different hardware?

TIA

Thx, I checked with symantec, and the price for the product you mentioned
for a single server license was 938.00 CAN (~ 750.00 US). That makes it more
expensive than the SBS 2003 server I am running. This seems expensive to
me...

I haven't followed the thread closely, but if you're looking for a live
drive imaging solution at a truly affordable price, check this product.

http://www.drive-backup.com/

I've used this with the paragon recovery CD to restore live imaged SBS 2k3,
and it works very well. File, folder, partition, disk - the restore can be
as granular as you'd like.

You can do a forklift by imaging to a media that the new hardware can read,
and then restoring that image. You'll need to install the loopback adapters
to hold the network configuration; you may need drivers for new hdd system
if it's different, and you may need to do an in-place repair of the OS if
the hardware is drastically different. In-place repair will most likely
require a phone-in activation. Additionally, you'll need to be adept at
removing ghost hardware that doesn't exist in new server. This kind of
operation is generally best done by the adventuresome type, with some
skills. This isn't a heavily documented method, but if you google this
newsgroup you'll find some posts. Also, I believe there is somthing similar
posted on http://www.smallbizserver.net.

You could break your mirror, install the good drive in your new server - do
a complete fresh install and setup, then copy over your data.

You could do a backup of the existing server, and then follow the recovery
procedure for SBS to restore your data.

You could do a swing migration, see http://www.sbsmigration.com

Thanx,

Your advice is usefull.

I will read through your suggestions, the hardware cheat install I think I
will avoid... I have been stung too many times with theoretical journeys,
that end up with a mess that eventually requires an re-install/migration any
way.

I have decided to involve MS support on this issue and have receiver the
following advice (abridged, if someone needs the full details just reply to
group and I will post them):

1. Install a pristine but simple win 2003 SBS install (don't run the
configure wizard or the other installs, just the OS). Promote this machine
to DC
2 Make target (new) machine a global catalog server
3 seize FMSO roles
4 verify roles/masters
5 active directory cleanup/exmerge or mdb folder import for exchange
6 install SBS components
7 complete exhange migration
8 import company web from backup (as per Sharepoint SBS migration docs)

More on the success later, thx for all the help in the meantime.

Hold it right there !!.

You should very seriously consider http://www.sbsmigration.com

I've completed forklift migrations, in-place upgrades, and clean
install/move data migrations, and swing migrations.

Swing tops them all, hands down.
