Help needed removing SP2 update files without first installing SP2 - any URLs?

I feel certain that this subject MUST have been covered here, but a Google.
Groups search turns up nothing with any logical character string that I can
think of.

My problem: XP-Media Edition. Auto Update was turned on, but when I began
seeing all the problems with SP-2 and so very many of my programs, I decided
that I did not want it at this time. I turned Auto Update off, but apparently,
the process had begun. For about three weeks, I had the Update icon in the
taskbar, showing 0% download. Then, one day, I got the "bing" and the Updates
Ready to Install notice - even though Auto Update had been turned off for
almost a month.

What I want to do is remove the file(s) that was downloaded for the install,
and also disconnect the notice. I don't want to start trashing MS download
files at random, and would like to manually use the Update feature for other
patches, security updates, etc. just not SP-2 at this time.

Can someone point me to either a URL with the removal procedure, with a file
list for deletion, and any other changes (Registry, etc.?) that I'll have to
make, or point me to articles? Probably an article with a Header Subject Line
of only "HELP!," or something equally useful. Or, barring that, help me refine
my search criteria so that I locate the necessary articles.

I suppose that I could just go ahead and install the Update, then Remove it,
but there should be a simpler way.

TIA
Hunt

Hi

To remove the pending download you now have, clean out the
Download folder (WU5's temporary download folder) located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

You might need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the Download folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

To avoid that Windows Updates/Automatic Updates tries to install
SP2 at all (up to 12. April 2005):

Toolkit to Temporarily Block Delivery of Windows XP SP2 to a PC
Through Automatic Updates and Windows Update
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Run the XPSP2BlockerTools.exe in the link above. It will extract
several files to the folder you specify.

Then run XPSP2Blocker.exe to activate the blockage (it will create
the registry value described in the link above).

This will not block you from installing SP2 from e.g. the SP2 CD
later on...
