Help please - Internet Explorer freezes when launching Windows Update

PC with Windows XP pro, IE v6, SP2.

IE seems to work fine, except when I run Windows Update. A few
progress bars load at the bottom of the screen, then it freezes. I
cannot shut down IE unless I use Task Manager.

When IE closes, another IE site loads automatically - promoting some
sort of adware blocker.

This PC had a major spyware/adware/etc. infection which I think I have
cleaned using AD-Aware SE, and McAfee virus scan.

This inability to run Windows Update now seems to be my only issue.

Any suggestions are appreciated,

That tells you that you still have spyware installed.
