| Hi, | | I am working on a friends computer. | | He is running Windows ME | | Hasn't been able to go on the web for a few months. | | I cannot uninstall & restore old I.E. | | I Cannot get to Update to re-install, because I.E. is not working. | | I tried to reinstall from safe mode & selective start up (Load static Vxd's | only) | | nothing works! | | Is there a way (link) I can download I.E. 6 and all its components onto a CD | from my computer (I am running Win98) and take it to his computer to | reinstall that way? | | If so, when I get to that point, should I reinstall in safe mode? | | If not....what do I do...I am completely baffled!! | | Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!! | | Thanks, | | Laura Try BHODemon. You may have a faulty Browser Helper Object. http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm I also suggest the following.... Dump the contents of the IE Temporary Internet Folder cache (TIF) Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Internet Options --> Delete Files Dump the contents of the Mozilla FireFox Cache { if you use FireFox } Tools --> Options --> Privacy --> Cache --> Clear Download CLEAN.EXE from the URL -- http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/clean.exe It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script Interpreter { http://kixtart.org Kixtart is CareWare } three batch files, two Kixtart scripts, two Link (.lnk) files and a PDF instruction file. GETFILES.BAT -- For downloading (FTP) the files needed to run the McAfee Command Line Scanner. You may have to disable your FireWall or allow FTP.EXE to go through your FireWall to allow the FTP utility to download the needed files CLEAN.BAT -- For running within Windows after running c:\mcafee\GetFiles.BAT. If you choose to scan again at a future date, run this batch file. It will automatically check the date of the McAfee DAT files and if it is a couple of days old, it will download (FTP) the latest signature files and install them before performing the scan. DOSCLEAN.BAT -- For use on a Win9x/ME PC or on a Win2K/WinXP PC that is using FAT32 after you have booted from an Emergency Boot Disk or DOS disk and have already executed; c:\mcafee\GetFiles.BAT from within Windows. DOS disk boot images can be obtained from; http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm I need you to perform the following... Execute; CLEAN.EXE Choose; Unzip Choose; Close Execute; c:\mcafee\GetFiles.BAT { or Double-click on 'GetFiles Link' in c:\mcafee } Reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key during boot] Shutdown as many applications as possible ! It would also help for you to read - "How to perform a clean boot in Windows XP" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 Execute; c:\mcafee\CLEAN.BAT { or Double-click on 'Clean Link' in c:\mcafee } A final report in HTML format called C:\mcafee\ScanReport.HTML will be generated. At the end of the scan, it will be displayed in your browser (Opera, FireFox or Internet Explorer). It is suggested that you move the report out of c:\mcafee before performing another scan. It would be a good idea to scan in Safe Mode and in Normal Mode and save a copy of the HTML report for each session. * * * Please report back your results * * * -- Dave http://www.claymania.com/removal-trojan-adware.html http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm |

Such symptoms are frequently the result of mistakenly attempting to reinstall ME over itself without first reverting back to IE5.5 - the resulting 'Version Soup' is almost impossible to repair, and the only sure way known is to completely remove IE and then reinstall whichever version you require. Instructions for this process are here http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm Please post back if you need more details - preferably before attempting the process!!<g> -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "David H. Hi,
Thanks for the help...one more question...probably a stupid one, but I'm getting punchy from trying so many things! Like I said before, I have Win98...friend has ME, (and can't download anything, because ...well...because he can't) So, I downloaded IE6 for ME to my desktop, along with everything else on your list....I'm going to copy it to a CDRW, and then on to his computer... I'm assuming this will work....If I'm wrong, please let me know...quickly, since I'm trying this tomorrow! P.S. Your link on "uninstalling & reinstalling IE" to download ie6 for ME...is really a link for XP!...(not to worry, I found what I was looking for anyways..just thought you might want a heads up) Thanks again....(P.S.) Dave's info was very different from yours, but I really do believe this is a broken browser issue...I guess if this doesn't work, I'll try that(thanks Dave) Laura Campbell "Noel Paton" wrote: > David/Laura > Such symptoms are frequently the result of mistakenly attempting to > reinstall ME over itself without first reverting back to IE5.5 - the > resulting 'Version Soup' is almost impossible to repair, and the only sure > way known is to completely remove IE and then reinstall whichever version > you require. > > Instructions for this process are here > http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm > > Please post back if you need more details - preferably before attempting the > process!!<g> > > > -- > Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) > > Nil Carborundum Illegitemi > http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm > > http://tinyurl.com/6oztj > > Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's > > "David H. It should work fine, Laura - Good Luck!
I'm aware that the instructions for downloading are XP-centric, but they do also work for ME (I may have to revise my page a little to make certain this is understood, and any corrections applied) - thanks for the heads-up. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Laura" <> wrote in message news:E3AEBF7C-9440-48EB-8058-... > Hi, > > Thanks for the help...one more question...probably a stupid one, but I'm > getting punchy from trying so many things! > > Like I said before, I have Win98...friend has ME, (and can't download > anything, because ...well...because he can't) So, I downloaded IE6 for ME > to > my desktop, along with everything else on your list....I'm going to copy > it > to a CDRW, and then on to his computer... > > I'm assuming this will work....If I'm wrong, please let me know...quickly, > since I'm trying this tomorrow! > > P.S. Hi, Well...I tried, but the browser still isn't browsing!
I did everything on the list except the following: Uninstall 'goback' (couldn't find it) I had no problems with anything else, all went smoothe...even fixed some other issues with the computer... But when on line I still cannot get web pages to load, including windows update...so I didn't get to download the repair patch 329115 either... So....any other suggestions...(I suggested he get rid of ME!) I can't run restoration disk/format, because he either never got, orlost his software for ME... Thanks for all your help so far... Oh...one other thing....if he decides to upgrade to XP...(from ME) are there any suggestions or problems that you know of? The fact that you couldn't find GoBack is no surprise - AFAIAC, it should
never be installed on either Win ME or WinXP, since in effect all it does is act as a keylogger, and hog CPU and RAM. (The most common reason that I know for people to have ME and GoBack installed is that they own a Gateway computer....)
