Hi,

If he never set a password before, then just click OK you don`t need put in
a password. Its just how the default login window looks like. If he had it
setup before to automatically bring him to the desktop after booting up, you
need to change the settings in the user accounts in the control panel.

Click Start - Run - enter "Control userpasswords2" without the quotes and
remove the check for "User must enter a user name and passord to use this
computer" then follow the prompts.

Thanks Jeff, but he did all:- clicking OK, typing 1234, pressing Esc key,
clicking cancel etc but it won't budge. i asked him to go into safe mode and
restore it to an earlier time. now waiting news from him whether it worked or
not

Hi,

That`s weird, windows does not put in a password, especially after an
update. But then again, you should always use a password, even if its only
a home system with one user. Is the user ID correct? Booting to safe mode
and logging as the Admin will work as long as he or something else didn`t
change the password.

When you install net framework from WU site, it causes this problem of the
Welcome screen appearing and asking for a password. By leaving it blank (no
password), the log in can be done and adjustments made after that.

Unfortunately we do not know what update was downloaded or installed on the
"friend's" computer, I took a guess it was the net framework one.

"reba4791" and "Eugene Wizzard",

Would you mind, letting us know what Operating System you were running and
what service pack before you downloaded these updates and hit this issue?
Specifically, was this:

Windows XP Home Edition?
Windows XP Professional?

Service Pack 1?
Service Pack 2?
No Service pack?

How to find out:
1. Click Start
2. Right-Click "My Computer"
3. Click Properties. When the window opens, under System: you will see text
that begins: "Microsoft Windows..." Please reply back to this group with
the entire text, such as:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2

Thank you VERY much for this!

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

I am having the same issue after installing the security updates, the only
way around it is to reformat and not install any updates etc but then I'm at
risk. The CD on fresh install is Winxp with SP2 although I believe the SP2 is
beta. Any suggestions on how to fix?
